WISBECH boss Roy McManus is expecting a tough game at rock-bottom Newmarket tomorrow.

McManus has spoken to Soham Town Rangers manager Ian Benjamin, whose side beat the Jockeys 2-0 in a recent league match, and been told to prepare for a battle.

McManus assisted Benjamin when he managed Wisbech Town.

And the Fenmen will be looking for revenge after suffering an embarrassing 5-0 Cambs Invitation Cup defeat to the Jockeys on January 8.

McManus said: "Newmarket's league position doesn't reflect how good they are. We already knew they could perform well on their day.

"We were dreadful in the 5-0 defeat but they still came to Fenland Park and thumped us.

"Soham are top of the league and flying and speaking to Ian, they had to work hard for their win and Newmarket caused them some problems, so it looks like they are finding some consistency.

"The players' pride was badly hurt when Newmarket thrashed us and I only hope they have learnt their lessons.

"We won't be taking them lightly."

McManus signed Benjamin's son, Tom Benjamin, last week.

The 20-year-old striker, who was once a part of the Fenmen's youth set-up, made his Wisbech first team debut when he came on as a substitute for the last 15 minutes of their 3-1 Ridgeons Premier League win over Harwich and Parkeston on Saturday.

McManus described the win as the best home performance from his players since he rejoined the club.

He said: "We were first class and we played with real quality. The passing and movement was superb."

Stuart Ablett fired Wisbech into the lead after 20 minutes.

The midfielder collected a superb cross-field pass from Stuart Cobb and lobbed the ball over the goalkeeper.

After Wisbech spurned several chances the visitors equalised 10 minutes into the second half through Matt Carmichael's 100th Harwich and Parkeston goal.

A quick counter-attack ended with the striker hitting a sweet low drive from just inside the penalty box.

Mark Jimson scrambled the ball home after a corner to put Wisbech back in front after 65 minutes.

But the Fenmen saved the best until last, when eight minutes later, James McManus stormed through the centre of midfield and played a one-two with Billy Smith, who threaded through a superb pass, for the midfielder to finish from eight yards.
