Workmen beginning early phases of a housing development at the former Wisbech Town FC stadium are thought to have gone through a main water pipe today and caused extensive flooding.
Anglian Water engineers have been at the site tonight in Lerowe Road to trace the source of the leak and repair it.
One nearby resident said: “Apparently they have gone through the main nine inch pipe at stadium. They are busy working on it now.”
On social media one woman posted: “Funnily enough it didn’t matter how much rain there was, that pitch hardly ever got waterlogged and a match was rarely called off!.”
Last month demolition teams moved onto the site to begin preparing for the building of 83 homes, seven years after the ground was sold for £1 million.
The four acre site was home to the Fenmen – now happily ensconced in a new stadium in Lynn Road- from 1947.
Prior to demolition work getting under way, the site had attracted considerable vandalism and frequent complaints from residents concerned over the deteriorating state of the old clubhouse and stands.
