A MOTHER was attacked and injured by a baton wielding woman after taking her five year old to school in Wisbech.

Terri-ann Newman approached the mum near the fire station in Churchill Road, and hit her around the head with the black metal extendable weapon.

“The blows knocked her victim to the ground,” prosecutor Scheherazade Haque told Fenland magistrates. “The victim shouted for help, and a passing ambulance and two paramedics stopped and separated them.

“The paramedics seized the baton and handed it over to the police. This was a premeditated assault.”

The victim of the assault had recently begun a relationship with Newman’s former partner, the court was told.

Ms Haque said Newman had followed her victim along the road, crouching between cars.

“As she approached the woman, Newman started to hit her over the head with the baton, the blows knocked the complainant to the ground and the blows continued,” said Ms Haque. The mother suffered bumps to the head, a bruised shoulder, a swollen face and bloody nose. She declined medical treatment.

“When arrested, Newman admitted assault, she had hit the woman with a baton, kicked and bit her.”

In court, 26-year-old Newman, of James Scott Close, Downham Market, admitted charges of assault and possessing an offensive weapon.

Solicitor Ian Graham said a report was needed to explore the background to the offence.

The court committed Newman to Cambridge Crown Court for sentencing.
