A READER who photographed a car when its driver fled the scene of an accident could have followed him or at least taken his picture, say police.

Following the driver or taking this picture would have been "the civic thing" to do was the reaction of a police officer when we sent him the crash photograph.

The photographer, who does not want to be named, said: "Yet again, a foreign driver crashes his car and legs it to leave the police scratching their heads." The crash happened in Mount Pleasant Road, Wisbech.

Police Sergeant Dave Bax at Wisbech police station said: "My big concern with the snapper's comment is - how does he know it is who he says the driver is?

"Perhaps doing the civic thing and following the suspect would be good. Why didn't he take a picture of the offender?

"We, the Wisbech police, are up to 1,828 persons arrested since January 08 from all different areas of Fenland, for different offences. I don't think the public realise how hard their police do work. We don't always get things right, but we always try our best to meet the expectations of our customers. We can't do it alone."

Sgt Bax confirmed that the driver had now been traced and charged with six offences.
