A Wisbech volunteer has retired from the town’s branch of Save The Children after almost 40 years.

Michael Killingback, who has spent nearly four decades organising fundraising events including bazaars, stalls and collections, said goodbye to the group last week. His fellow committee members surprised him with flowers and a gift voucher on his departure.

Michael’s fundraising efforts saw him meet the Princess Royal at Jesus College in 1985 and he and his wife, Janet, raised £600 for the charity for their silver wedding anniversary.

He said: “I really enjoyed and appreciate the surprise and I will continue to help whenever I can.”

Save The Children is an international charity that helps protect children’s rights and supports children in developing countries. Its website says: “We do whatever it takes for children – every day and in times of crisis – transforming their lives and the future we share.”

Last year, the charity supported over 56 million children directly through its work.
