Wisbech primary school pupils are set to receive Arts Award Discover certificates after completing ‘jam-packed’ workshops ahead of the Wisbech Reads Festival and Summer Reading Challenge.
More than 300 Year 3 pupils from six schools in Wisbech will take part in the arts workshops held at Wisbech Library and the town’s museum with the aim of “developing their creativity and interest in arts”.
Developed as part of ‘The Library Presents’ – in partnership with 20Twenty Productions – the programme has been planned with Wisbech Reads Festival, which is taking place from July 10 to 12.
One of the participating teachers said: “It’s great to do arts activities in the library and museum, it shows just how versatile the space is and makes the children feel they’re really welcome.”
Councillor Mathew Shuter, chairman of the highways and community infrastructure committee at Cambridgeshire County Council, said: “Through our ‘The Library Presents’ programme we are committing to inspire young children to grow their arts and leadership talents.
“We are very proud to work with these Wisbech primary schools to help hundreds of pupils gain their Arts Award certificates.
“We look forward to welcoming all the children to Wisbech Library for the Summer Reading Challenge and an exciting autumn season of ‘The Library Presents’.”
Pre-school and primary school aged children will also be encouraged to take part in the Summer Reading Challenge which kicks off in libraries on Saturday July 14.
Readers of all abilities can sign up at their local library and this year’s theme is ‘mischief makers’, in partnership with The Beano.
Workshops have already taken place at Orchard’s Primary School, St Peter’s Junior School and Nene and Ramnoth Primary School in June.
Three more sessions are scheduled in July in Kinderley Community Primary and Alderman Payne Primary School (July 9) and Peckover Primary School (July 18).
‘The Library Presents’, funded by Arts Council England, will launch their autumn season of arts events for all ages in libraries, including Wisbech Library in August.
