The Green Flags are still flying high in Wisbech after two of the town’s open spaces retained the prestigious status for the tenth year running.

Wisbech Park and St Peter’s Church Gardens have each received their tenth consecutive Green Flag award – making it an impressive 20 flags in total for the town.

The award, given by the environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy, recognises open spaces that maintain the highest standards, are beautifully kept and have excellent facilities. The Green Flag scheme was set up in 1996 to reverse the decline in UK parks.

The local areas are two of 1,600 locations which have been visited by judges over the past year. Judges are ‘green space experts’ who assess sites against eight criteria which include horticultural standards, cleanliness, sustainability and community involvement.

Bob Ollier, parks and open spaces manager at Fenland District Council, added: “We’d like to thank Wisbech Town Council, the Friends of St Peters Church Gardens and Wisbech Parks Friends, the Council’s cleansing staff and the horticultural contractor companies that continue to work together to make our open spaces the best they can be.”
