PUPILS at Wisbech's Thomas Clarkson Community College enjoyed a double celebration - meeting Olympic badminton star Gail Emms and winning three football trophies.

Emms visited the school last Wednesday to encourage youngsters to take up sport.

The world and commonwealth champion in 2006, and top British player in 2008, visited the school as an Athlete Mentor, under the Sky Sports Living for Sport scheme.

"I have had a brilliant time here, talking to the pupils and playing some badminton," she said.

"They have been a great group, and made me very welcome, they loved it when I beat their teacher!"

Emms' visit was in support of the Living for Sport scheme that was set up by the Youth Sport Trust.

All secondary schools can join in the scheme by contacting the Youth Sport Trust website.

The school's year eight football team won the boys Minute Maid Cup, the Cambridgeshire County Cup, and the Isle of Ely League this season.

"I am really proud of them, this is their most successful season," said coach and PE teacher Matthew Garrod. "They trained really hard, that's why they have done so well."

The team was thrilled to have the Cambridgeshire County Cup final match refereed by professional referee Howard Webb. That match took place just three days after he refereed a match between Manchester United and Tottenham.
