Wisbech mayor Steve Tierney has revealed that a private “invite-only” party on the night he celebrated taking office raising a whopping £4,400 for his chosen charities.
Cllr Tierney posted on his blog that the fund raising event was for friends, colleagues and family.
“With a free bar and lots of food and a live band, we partied the night away and it was a wonderful end to a truly brilliant day,” he wrote. “Actually, one of the best days of my life.
“But the event was also a fundraiser. Guests were asked to make anonymous donations or named pledges. I am proud to say we raised £4,400 on my first fundraiser, which is an excellent start for the Mayor’s Charity Fund this year.”
Cllr Tierney said that during the course of this year he and his wife would be raising money for local causes, charities and groups.
He said there were nine main charities/causes/funds we will be supporting and these are:
St Augustine’s Day Centre
Community House, Waterlees
Fenland Gymnastics Academy
Wisbech Stroke Club
*Mayor’s Defibrillator Fund
Wisbech Reads
Wisbech Scouts
Cat Haven
Sharman’s Legacy Dog Rescue
*The Mayor’s Defibrillator Fund is not an existing charity, said the mayor who hopes to raise enough to install at least one additional defibrillator station in Wisbech, in the Town Park.
He wrote: Some of these are charities which we chose and some are those that were suggested to us by local people in a post on the Wisbech Discussion Forum.
“Our fundraising will not be limited to only these, as we will try and help ANY Wisbech-based local fund, charity or group who asks in any way we are able. But these are the named ones we have chosen as our focus.”
Cllr Tierney said that it was his intention to work closely with the new Mayor of March, Kim French.
He said: “The relationship between Wisbech and March has at times been complicated. But March is our closest neighbour and our best friend. Cllr Ms French and we intend to work closely, linking the work we are doing as mayors of the two towns.”
