IN more ways than one it was the Mayor's golden opportunity. Invited to join the annual pancake race at Huntingdon, the Mayor of Wisbech, Jonathan Farmer, turned out in full mayoralty robes and chains, the latter made of 6.5 lbs of pure gold.
He was the envy of many other civic dignitaries competing and Cllr Farmer was determined to return home triumphant.
But both he and the other participants fell victim to an unexpected catastrophe after a fellow competitor, John Davies, the chairman of Huntingdonshire District Council, tripped and fell, cutting his head in the process.
The pancake was race was abandoned, Cllr Davies was returned from hospital with little more than his civic pride dented, and Cllr Farmer returned to Wisbech hopeful that next year's Mayor might bring home the trophy.
