A Wisbech man has published a book about life during the Second World War.
Written by Kevin Rodgers, ‘Wisbech At War – The Home Front’ details the hardships people faced during wartime.
“The story of bombs that fell on Wisbech is retold in detail and memories of those involved are given,” Kevin said.
“After research in Cambridge and the Wisbech and Fenland Museum, I appealed to those old enough to actually remember the details and has stories of London evacuees sent to live in Wisbech as well as those whose homes were destroyed by the Luftwaffe.
“I collected hundreds of newspaper articles, mostly from The Wisbech Standard of the war years.
“Did you realise that Wisbech collected enough to buy its own Spitfire? The disappointment of a few when The Tank in the Park was sent for scrap or the heartbreak when many Wisbech men in the Cambridgeshire Regiment were captured within a few days of landing in Singapore.
“They stayed in captivity for more than three years.
“Concern about invasion was rife and there are official documents advising how the Home Guard could attack a tank with a shotgun (just like Dad’s Army shown on television)”
‘Wisbech at War – The Home Front’ is available from Wisbech Museum or Etcetera York Row, Wisbech. It is priced at £4.50.
