A sixth form scientist at Wisbech Grammar School has been offered a place at Cambridge University.

Andrew Turner, 17, who lives in Wisbech, has received a conditional offer to read natural sciences at Sidney Sussex College – which ranks fourth highest amongst the university’s colleges in Nobel Prizes won by alumni.

He will need to achieve the required grades in his A Level examinations in chemistry, physics, mathematics and further mathematics in the summer to secure the place.

Outside the classroom Andrew has acted as the financial director for the school’s Young Enterprise company, Phoenix, which won the ‘Triumph over adversity’ prize at the Peterborough district area final.

He has also completed a gold expedition to the Lake District as he works towards the highest honour of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award.

Last summer he joined the school’s three-week expedition to Ecuador, spending six days building a bridge in the rain forest and following in the footsteps of Charles Darwin during a visit to Galapagos.

He said: “I have wanted to go to Cambridge for years and I was delighted to hear about the offer.”
