GOLD medal winner Wisbech could be forced to quit the Anglia in Bloom contest unless new greenhouses and poly tunnels can be found.

Wisbech in Bloom secretary Penny Stocks said: "We have got great plans for the future but without us having somewhere to grow on the plants for our sponsored hanging baskets and containers the whole thing could fall apart and we will be in real trouble.

Transfer of the land-based faculty from the Wisbech campus of the College of West Anglia to Milton will leave organisers with a major problem.

Most of the plants for the sponsored hanging baskets and containers are grown on in greenhouses and poly tunnels at the college.

As finishing touches were being made before the arrival of judges for this year's contest, an SOS has gone out to find a new growing base for next year. In 2008 Wisbech took top honours in the large town category beating rival Bury St Edmunds and this year will also represent the Anglia Region in the national competition.

Mrs Stocks said: "What we really need is a benefactor who can let us have the use of a greenhouse which is secure and where there is water.

"We cannot afford to buy the baskets already made up and if we can't find somewhere I am afraid this could be our last year in the competition."

Plants are bought as plugs and are grown on to fill around 180 sponsored hanging baskets and varying containers which are found around the town. Cost of sponsoring a hanging basket is 30.

The greenhouse will be needed from early April for a period of about 10 weeks.

"Not being able to enter would be a huge blow," said Mrs Stocks.
