A Wisbech girl who spent her pocket money on ice lollies for firefighters tackling a large outdoor blaze during the heatwave was rewarded with a private tour of the town’s fire station.
The girl, called Tia, was invited to Wisbech fire station for her own personal visit by watch commander James Thompson after he saw a “heart-warming” post about her kind gesture on social media.
Along with her younger brother and mum, Tia met some of the firefighters and tried out the crew’s equipment.
Watch commander Thompson said: “I joined a Wisbech Facebook forum a little while ago, because, as a watch commander here, I thought it would give me a great insight into our local community and what concerns and motivates people living here.
“It was on this forum that I saw the most heart-warming post about a little girl who had asked to spend her pocket money on ice lollies for firefighters tackling a large outdoor fire during the heatwave.
“It was such a touching post that I decided that this small act of kindness shouldn’t go unnoticed. I asked to be put into contact with her mother to invite her to the station for her own personal visit and tour, and to meet some of the firefighters.
“It was a lovely visit and Tia brought her younger brother Reggie to enjoy the trip as well, which he certainly did.
“Tia was a charming and very polite young lady and a credit to her mother Leia who escorted them both. We made sure that her wonderful gesture for those firefighters was well appreciated by all at Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service.”
• Later this month Cambs Fire will be holding taster sessions for those interested in finding out more about becoming a firefighter. The ‘Have a Go’ sessions will take place on Friday September 28 at Dogsthorpe Fire Station in Peterborough, and Saturday September 29 at Huntingdon Fire Station.
