A COMMUNITY Support Officer working in Wisbech has been nominated for a national award which recognises her efforts to crackdown on crime in the town centre.

PCSO Michelle Poulter, who has been quick to engage with the community since joining Cambridgeshire Police in 2006, has been nominated for Community Support Officer of the Year at an awards ceremony to be held in London tomorrow.

She had identified a number of organised criminals who were causing problems in Wisbech - securing ASBOs to exclude them from the town centre.

The citation for her award read: “Her method was to suggest excluding the criminals from the town centre, with the community and its shop workers operating an ‘all eyes together’ form of community watch.”

She was also responsible for bringing about the first drinking banning orders in Cambridgeshire against three trouble makers in the town.

The awards ceremony will take place at The London Hilton on Park Lane tomorrow.

The Rural Community Action Team have also been nominated for the Diversity in Action Award - for their work organising regular meetings with the traveller communities across Cambridgeshire.

If the team are successful in gaining the award they will receive a 5000 bursary which will help them to continue their work.

Also nominated are Inspector Alan Savill, for a lifetime achievement award, and Pc Andrew Badcock, for Community Police Officer of the Year. Both are from Cambridge Parkside Police Station.
