SIX readers will each win a polypin of one of Elgood’s Olympic beers as Wisbech brewery gives some sporting events a canine twist.

BEACH Collieball, Pug-of-War and Cocker-less Four are three events which make up a Fenland brewery’s Dog Decathlon in celebration of this summer’s Olympics.

Elgood’s has created 10 beers to mark London 2012 and has named them after sports - but with a canine twist.

The Dog Decathlon was the idea of Robin Hotson, Elgood’s estates manager, when the Wisbech company looked to create an Olympic beer that would stand out from the rest.

Mr Hotson said: “There are so many microbreweries around and when you visit a Real Ale pub the customer wants something different every time.

“We were thinking of brewing an Olympic beer but then we realised that everyone is going to be doing an Olympic beer. I thought about Elgood’s dog emblem and the Black Dog beer and the Dog Decathlon was born.

“Four or five of us sat around a table coming up with some fun names and Wisbech artist Tony Leach designed some logos.”

Some of the beers in the range are based on existing recipes - but a couple have an interesting twist. For example the 100 Metre Dachshund, the beer for June, has an essence of raspberry.

The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee is also highlighted in 100 Metre Dachshund logo, with the Monarch pictured starting the race.

The campaign started on March 1 and each beer is available for one month only. As a result the first beer, called Kick-Boxer, is no longer available but it was popular with pubs and customers.

About 100 pubs in East Anglia have signed up to stock all 10 beers, with more joining the list every week.

Marcus Beecher, free trade sales manager, said: “The initiative has been very well received in the trade - we have lots of reorders for Kick-Boxer - but comments from customers have been good too.

“If pubs are reordering beers it’s a sign that it’s popular because there is so much choice - there are more breweries in the UK now than before the First World War.”

Elgood’s, established in 1795, owns 36 pubs, most of which are in the Fens.

One of its pubs that will stock all 10 beers is the Kings Head in Wisbech. Landlord Aigars Balsevics said: “A lot of people liked the Kick-Boxer.”

TO celebrate the Elgood’s Dog Decathlon six readers will each win a 17-pint polypin of their choice.

To help you choose your prize we have provided the description for each beer - but you won’t be able to redeem your prize until your chosen month. Kick-Boxer is not available as a prize.
