POLICE have issued a stark reminder about the dangers of trespassing on railway lines after fining one cyclist who was caught red-handed.
The 22-year-old man was seen by patrolling officers jumping a lowered barrier with his cycle at Watlington, near Downham Market, shortly before a train was due to pass.
Following consultation with British Transport Police (BTP), officers from Downham Safer Neighbourhood Team issued the man with a 50 fine.
Team member PC Richard Bodley, one of the officers involved, said: "The number of tragedies caused by trespass on the railways should be reason enough for people to stop and think.
"Road users are dicing with their lives if they ignore the warning signal and lights and cross the lowered barrier. We work closely with BTP to educate road users and prevent accidents on the railways. It doesn't matter is someone is underage, they face being dealt with by police for trespassing or playing near the railway lines."
The man was fined this weekend following the incident which occurred at 11pm on Friday September 4.
