A sweetener of up to £100,000 to Leverington for improvements to the village hall has been offered if developers Richard and Amanda Pegg win permission for 227 homes on the former Delamore site in Sutton Road, Wisbech.

Agent Peter Humphrey revealed the offer in his detailed application to Fenland District Council on behalf of Milton Developments (Fenland) Ltd, the company run by the Peggs.

Mr Humphrey said the offer was one of several contributions that could be made to benefit local communities.

“Leverington Village Hall has need for improvements and an extension to update their facilities,” he said. “The hall committee have been approached and are

100 per cent behind the development, providing their village hall is improved.”

He said the hall committee was going through the process to agree what works they can afford and initial estimates stand at £80,000: the developers will offer up to £100,000. Mr Humphrey said Leverington held a “better relation” to the site than Wisbech.

Residents have been told that have less than three weeks – including two bank holidays- if they want to oppose the homes plan.

Letters went out this week to those likely to be affected by the proposals. The 23 acre former Delamore horticultural site is located between Sutton Road and Horseshoe Terrace with access planned via the existing entrance at 88 Sutton Road. Industrial and other buildings will be demolished.

“The site is considered to be in a very sustainable location”, says agent Peter Humphrey in his application to Fenland District Council.

He insists the site – in flood zones two and three- is not at risk of flooding and its proximity to the centre of town “highlights the sustainability of the site”.

Mr Humphrey says the site is not allocated within the Fenland Local Plan but if agreed will provide much needed housing for the town.

“It is clear that the site provides a number of community benefits which outweigh the fact that the site is within an identified flood risk zone,” he says.
