THE EVENT: 24-hour dog grooming marathon at the College of West Anglia's Orchard Grooming Centre, Wisbech.

WHY WAS IT HELD? "The students were looking for a challenge and wanted to help rescued dogs abroad," said course director Jayne Marchant. "I and Amanda Sullivan-Webb, a former student and now a learning support officer and part-time lecturer, went to Istanbul and researched some rescue homes in the area and we decided to help a huge rescue home which looks after 300 dogs. We plan to go back out there in June and take the veterinary products bought with the money raised to help these dogs. We are also helping the Dogs Trust in Romania."

HOW MANY DOGS WERE GROOMED? More than 100 dogs of all shapes and sizes - from terriers to Labradors and St Bernard's to German Shepherds. Jayne said: "The last dogs we were grooming were small dogs, such as Yorkshire Terriers. We actually cancelled an appointment for two Pyrenean Mountain Dogs at 5.30am on the Saturday, because we were so tired we could not even pick ourselves off the floor! We also think we have raised well over £1,000."

WAS A NEW WORLD RECORD SET? It was smashed! Amanda groomed 80 dogs in eight hours. The centre was set a target of 50 dogs being groomed in eight hours by one person, after the Guinness Book of World Records scaled down a record set in Australia of more than 800 animals being groomed by 12 people. Jayne said: "We started at 9am Friday and Amanda had beaten the target by noon. And when we hear back from the Guinness Book of World Records that we have got the record we are going to hold a big party for everyone who was involved."

HOW ABOUT DANCER THE PONY, WHICH TRIED TO SNEAK IN? "Dancer was brought early and got groomed - complete with Dalmatian disguise," said Jayne. "And she was followed in by a hoard of Dalmatians."

WILL IT BE DONE AGAIN? "We will have a new challenge next year," said Jayne. "Watch this space.
