Glen Dellow, who is ex Royal Anglian regiment, has been assisting Steven Burrell aka ‘Stig’, who has been sleeping outside the Burger King restaurant since October 2018.

He said: “I have been trying to assist him and get him rehoused and off the streets.

“I have done everything possible to get this ex Royal Artillery veteran re-housed.”

Mr Dellow also spoke to the Royal British Legion and it is hoped that ‘Stig’ will be able to get his war pension back dated back to 1983.

Whilst on the streets, Mr Dellow said that ‘Stig’ has been “made vulnerable to assault.

“There was a security officer who was able to keep an eye from time to time but he was made redundant in September.

“Since then, Stig has been made vulnerable to assault and I have made various organisations aware of Stig’s plight.

“I tried to get him off the street prior to winter coming but so far I have had no luck.

“It has reached the stage where we need to raise awareness for homeless veterans on our 100 years centenary of World War One.”

Veterans for the Homeless, an organisation which has been submitted for charity status, started with a night sleeping rough in the streets of Norwich.

It saw a group of veterans from the Royal Anglian Regiment, The Light Dragoons and the Royal Air Force stage a SleepRough event where they mixed with the homeless.

A spokesman for the group said: “Whilst there we were shocked at the amount of time we were moved on by the authorities and shopping centre security.

“Our only aim was to highlight the fact that we have many homeless, including veterans living on the streets who are being let down by local authorities and housing associations.

“The event not only raised awareness as a JustGiving page raised £2,700 which was used to buy warm clothing and sleeping bags to all homeless people in need.”

The group is staging another SleepRough event, this time in Cambridge, on Saturday November 24 from 1pm.

The first meet up place will be at Jimmy’s night shelter on East Road, the second RV point will be at the lower end of Parkers Piece at 2pm.

Mr Dellow added: “Maximum attendance is requested. We are planning on bringing along a street barber as well as our volunteers and support vehicles.

“All welcome to come along and please share this and show support.”
