COUNTY Fire and Rescue chiefs are calling for drivers to be extra vigilant on the roads today after they were called to eight separate road traffic collisions in a three hour period this morning.

The collisions occurred between the hours of 6am and 9am this morning in the Peterborough, Little Thetford, Warboys, Haslingfield and Great Gransden areas, as many drivers were travelling to work.

After two of the collisions, crews were required to cut casualties from their vehicles using specialist cutting equipment, and in one, they were required to provide emergency first aid and oxygen at the scene.

Chris Strickland, Deputy Chief Fire Officer for Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "The best advice is to only travel on essential journeys and to be extra vigilant while driving.

"If you do need to go on the roads, drive slowly, allowing extra room to slow down and stop. It can take ten times longer to stop in icy conditions than on a dry road.

"Use the highest gear possible, manoeuvre gently, avoiding harsh breaking and acceleration and if you start to skid, ease off the accelerator, but do not brake suddenly.

"Remember, the most important thing is that you arrive at your destination, with your car and yourself in one piece."
