A team of pupils at Marshland Primary School, whose aim is to reduce the number of cars at their gates, has had a parents' shelter installed.

Aim of the shelter is to provide somewhere for parents to stand during the winter so that they continue to walk to school and leave the cars at home.

The pupils started their project earlier in the year with the aims to keep cars off the road. They asked parents to walk, bike or park and stride to school in a bid to reduce pollution and traffic congestion.

The parents' shelter is the latest initiative of the travel team.

A team spokesman said: "The response from parents and children has been brilliant. With winter approaching, we wanted to give parents some shelter from the cold, the wind and rain as a thank-you for their continuing support. A local builder, Philip Wagg, designed the shelter for us."

Victor Ward, school caretaker and cleaner, and runner up in the Caretaker of the Year award, officially opened the shelter and is pictured here with some of the pupils after the opening.
