A DAY of action took place in Wisbech yesterday as part of Operation Saruman - the force's response to metal theft in the county.

Two people were arrested during the activity at a scrap yard on Osbourne Road, Wisbech.

Around 14 officers - from the Wisbech neighbourhood policing team and the force's major investigation team - entered the scrap yard and discovered a stolen car, and stolen kegs.

The warrant was conducted at 8.45am and officers left the site at 1.30pm.

Sergeant Rachel Patterson, who led the action, said: "This was a very successful warrant which is part of the force's continued commitment to Operation Saruman.

"However, I would stress that police cannot tackle this type of crime alone and I would urge members of the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious behaviour.

"People should be particularly suspicious of unusual activity around vulnerable buildings, such as churches, schools, homes under construction or community centres, and also around manhole covers, which thieves will often remove to access underground cable.

"Any information, no matter how insignificant it may seem, could be vital."

A 55-year-old man from Wisbech was arrested on suspicion of theft of a motor vehicle and suspicion of theft.

A 19-year-old man from Wisbech was arrested on suspicion of handling stolen goods.

Both have been bailed to Wisbech Police Station on April 2.
