Tributes paid to Wisbech greengrocer John Newton who passed away last month aged 88
Tributes have been paid to former Wisbech greengrocer and businessman John Newton, who died last month.
Kenneth John Newton, affectionately known as John, was born in Wisbech in 1927 and apart from completing two years of National Service in Africa, remained living in the town until his retirement in 1990.
He established himself as a well-known businessman in Wisbech, and together with his wife Pamela, was the proprietor of The Salad Bowl in Norfolk Street.
Their business was later extended to include ‘Newton’s’ in High Street, before finally moving to larger premises in Hill Street.
For 40 years the couple also ran the specialist salad stall on the Wisbech Saturday market, joined by their children Jamie, Alison and Penny.
Mr Newton was involved with the Chamber of Commerce, Norfolk Street Traders Association and in later years, the Pensioner’s Association.
He will be remembered, amongst other things, for the amusing motifs referring to topical local issues which featured in his shop windows.
Mr Newton and his wife spent many happy years in retirement, first in France then later moving to Southern Spain, where John passed away on 21st November 2015, aged 88.
He is survived by his wife and three children.
