Police and council officials are working to make sure there is no breach of the peace after about 30 gypsy vans parked at the rugby field in Wisbech.

The travellers have used Wisbech as a stop off gathering point on their way to the famous Appleby Horse fair.

A Cambridgeshire Police spokesman said: “We have had several calls about caravans parked up in Chapel Road, Wisbech. It is believed there are about 30 there now.

“It is believed they will be staying there until Friday before moving on to Appleby Fair.

“We are working with Fenland District Council to ensure there is no breach of the peace.”

The fair describes itself as an annual gathering of gypsies and travellers and takes place on the first week of June in the Cumbrian town of Appleby.

This year’s event takes place from Thursday June 4 to Wednesday June 10.

A spokesman for Fenland District Council said: “We were alerted to the encampment on Monday evening and have been attempting to persuade the group to move on.

“We are also in regular contact with the police and are continuing to monitor the situation closely.”
