THE Conservative Party has won the vacant Mershe Lande seat on West Norfolk Council in a by election held alongside the General Election yesterday.
Tory candidate Jonathan Johns polled 548 votes in the by election, with Independent candidate Carol Coleman second with 372 votes.
Mrs Coleman's result pushed Liberal Democrat candidate John Nicholas-Letch into third with 212 votes. Labour candidate John Collop polled 173 votes.
The seat was vacant following the resignation of Independent candidate and wind turbine protester David Markinson, who has moved to Spain.
