TWO Fenland primary school teachers have been nominated as regional finalists for the 2008 Teaching Awards.

Claire Asher, who teaches at the Anthony Curton Primary School in Walpole St Peter and Caroline Nofer, a Gorefield Primary School teacher have been shortlisted as East of England finalists.

Miss Nofer was initially put forward for the award by one of her pupils, eight-year-old Maya-Rose Tomlinson.

"You can take anything in the world that was boring to Miss Nofer and she will make it more fun than Disneyland," said Maya's application to judges.

Miss Nofer is one of four teachers from the region nominated for 'The BT Award for Teacher of the Year in a Primary School.'

She said: "I really enjoy spending time with the children and it's really rewarding when you see them enjoy learning and make good progress."

Mrs Asher, who is special needs co-ordinator at Anthony Curton, is a regional finalist for The Award for Special Needs Teacher of the Year.

Head teacher Anne Senior nominated her for the award.

"I have been teaching for 15 years and it is such a rewarding profession," Mrs Asher said.

"My role in special needs means I help children with a range of needs such as dyspraxia, dyslexia and global delay.

"Watching them progress and improve really gives me a kick."

Both teachers and their colleagues will join other Eastern finalists at a glitzy award ceremony at De Vere Dunston Hall, in Norwich on June 12.

If successful at the regional awards, they will go on to the national finals later this year.
