Kate Armstrong celebrated her 100th birthday this week with a very special present - a framed photograph of her great grandfather who was the official guide for Morecambe Bay sands during the 19th century.

The photograph was given to Mrs Armstrong by Cedric Robinson, the present Queen's Guide over the sands.

Originally from Grange-over-Sands, near Morecambe, Mrs Armstrong moved to Wisbech in 1956 with her husband, John.

She was a staunch member of the WI and worked voluntarily in Mary's Pantry at the North Cambs Hospital.

When she was widowed 10 years ago she returned to the north where she lives independently in Preston surrounded by her family and friends. She enjoys good health and is visited regularly by her two daughters, four grandchildren and her nine great grandchildren.
