MODERN Thai-style fish and chips tickled the taste buds of the judges in the first round of the Rotary Club cookery competition at Wisbech Grammar School.

The 30 students at the school who entered the contest were pared down to five in a series of cook-offs and a clutch of cooking cognoscenti from the Rotary Club declared that Alex Burrows-McGill had served up the perfect platter.

Now the upper sixth form student, who lives in Wisbech, is set to steam ahead to the next round of the competition in King's Lynn against other local schools.

Alison Sloan, the school's head of food and nutrition, said: "The standard was incredibly high.

"Some of the other mouth-watering dishes we had included rabbit pie, pork with apples and cider and oriental salmon.
