SEVENTY four fixed penalty notices for speeding have been issued in the past three months in a bid to crack down on speeding in parts of Wisbech.

"This is an important issue to both the police and residents and we will continue our proactive approach to dealing with the problem," said Sergeant Sharon Burrell.

"We made it clear three months ago that we would not tolerate speeding in and around the town.

"Since that time we have carried out a large number of speed checks around the town.

"People who speed are not only risking their own lives but also the lives of others."

The crackdown on speeding was reported to 30 residents and partner agency representatives at the second open meeting called by the Wisbech and district neighbourhood policing team.

Residents were told that anti-social behaviour is to be among the issues tackled in a new crackdown.

"Over the next three months the team has been tasked to look at rural speeding, parking in the town centre and rural anti-social behaviour," said Sgt Burrell.

Police will also be cracking down on criminal damage both in the town centre and in Parson Drove.

She said daily high visibility patrols and specialist operations with partner agencies, including Fenland District Council, Cambridgeshire City Council and Trading Standards were all ongoing.

"In the past 12 months officers working in the town centre have issued over 1200 fixed penalty notices for disorder and illegal parking," said Sgt Burrell.

She added: "The team is committed to ensuring that Wisbech and the surrounding villages are a safe place for everyone who lives in and visits them.
