STUDENTS across Fenland were celebrating after a record number achieved higher than expected GSCE exam results.

Schools across the district reported that exam results were higher than previous years with Neale-Wade Community College reporting its best results in the college's history.

Other schools and colleges celebrated improved GSCE results including the newly formed Thomas Clarkson Community College in Wisbech which saw an eight per cent increase in results from the previous year.

Maureen Strudwick acting headteacher, said: "We have improved on the results last year and it is a good sign that Thomas Clarkson is making progress."

Top performers included Rohit Kishor and Jennifer Moore, who both achieved nine A* and A grades and passed every subject

Twenty four per cent of students achieved five A*-C including English and Maths an eight per cent increase from last year.

At Wisbech Grammar School the A*/A pass rate was 50 pre cent and 99 per cent of students achieved five A*-C passes including English and Mathematics.

The School recorded a 100 per cent record at grades A-E.

Hannah Redwood and Nilushi Karunaratne, achieved nine A*s each.

Following hard on their heels were Rosie Tasker and Alice Thorpe with eight A*s and one A apiece.

Headmaster Nick Hammond, said: "The performance in the GCSEs this year can be summed up in one word: tremendous."

At Neale-Wade Community College a total of 68per cent of Year 11 students gained at least five A*-C passes and this is the best results in the College history.

A total of 42per cent of students gained five A*-C passes which includes passes in English and mathematics.

A number of students produced outstanding results, including: Luke Barron and Andrew Kerr who both achieved eight A* and two A grades, Georgia Midghall - four A* five A and one B grade, Hannah Foad - three A* six A and one B grade and Alexa Ferguson - three A* five A grades and two B grades.

College Principal Tim Hitch said "I am delighted that the student's ability, enthusiasm, commitment and hard work have been rewarded by these results."

Education chiefs at Sir Harry Smith Community College in Whittlesey said they were delighted with the students GSCE exam results.

A total of 71per cent of students achieved 5 A*-C grades and 62per cent achieved 5 A*-C including English and Maths.

Principal Jonathan Digby said: "The results reflect the hard work and dedication of both the students and the teachers."

Outstanding individual results were achieved by: Rosie Curtis 11A*, 2A, 1B

Daniel Smith 8A*, 5A, Robert Timms 5A*, 5A, 1B and also Nicole Chapman, Laura Williams, John Grant, Matthew Sumner, Bethan Saunders, Jack Collis and Jenny Sharman.

Marshland High School headteacher Matthew Parr-Burham said he had been disappointed with the school's results. A total of 43per cent of students achieved 5 A*-C and 29pc achieved 5A*-C including English and maths.

But he said there had been some outstanding individual results including Aaron Cobb who achieved eight A* and four A's, which was the highest results any individual at the school had ever had and also Samantha Bedford who gained 3A* and nine A's.

Mr Parr-Burman, said that students and staff would work even harder next year to achieve better results.
