THERE was a surprise for sprightly Ruth Lake when she celebrated her 100th birthday with family and friends on Wednesday.

Not only did she receive a congratulatory telegram for the Queen but she was one of the first centenarians to be presented with a telegram by the chairman of The Oddfellows.

Chairman Nicola O'Riordan-Finlay, who is known in the society as the grand master, visited Mrs Lake to present the telegram in person.

Also attending was previous chairman Keith Adamson and his wife, Alison, who is the region's secretary.

The couple presented Mrs Lake with a bouquet and a cheque.

Mrs Lake has been as associate member of The Oddfellows society for many years along with several members of her family.

Still enjoying reasonably good health, Mrs Lake manages to live independently in her flat in West Street with help from her two daughters and daughter-in-law.

She also has five grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.

A widow, Mrs Lake was married to Thomas for more than 50 years.

She has lived in Wisbech since she was 17 when she moved to the town to look after children.
