WISBECH is preparing to host a series of events next year to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the signing of the Slave Act.

It was the act which effectively abolished the slave trade in the British Empire - and it was a Wisbech man who was at the forefront of that campaign.

The passing of the Slave Act was the result of work initiated by Thomas Clarkson, who was born in Wisbech.

To celebrate the work of Wisbech's famous son the town will be hosting a number of events from March to November.

The Wisbech Society is co-ordinating the celebrations and organising the local and national publicity.
