A WISBECH school, warned earlier this year it needed "significant improvement", has broken for the summer holidays on a high after ringing in the changes.

Staff, parents, pupils and governors at Ramnoth Junior School were all praised by a schools' inspector after an end-of-term review.

Tim Boyce of OfSTED complimented the school on "making satisfactory progress on the issues identified at the last inspection".

Mr Boyce said he was particularly pleased that the school, with 247 pupils on its roll, had taken swift and effective action to introduce a comprehensive tracking system.

"This now allows staff to monitor the progress of all the pupils in reading, writing and mathematics and to set detailed targets for improvement," he said.

"These improvements are clearly displayed in every classroom and the children assure me that it is helping them to know what to do to get better. In this regard improvement is good."

Mr Boyce is also full of praise for the governors and Ramnoth has a full governing body for the first time in a long while.

"Following a significant input of training, they are beginning to understand the importance of regular, focused visits so that they can gain a clear understanding of improvements as they happen," he said.

Earlier this year OfSTED gave the school 12 months to improve, and Mr Boyce says the school has identified many areas for improvement which are being tackled.

And he said the school had improved its strategic planning and the full attention of the senior management team is now focused on raising standards and improving achievement.

"More work will need to be done to ensure that all staff share this commitment so that the current rate of improvement continues to accelerate," he added.
