SAFETY campaigners are reeling after three crashes in six days less than a mile from a recently completed 350,000 road improvement scheme.

While they believe restructuring of the road plus new signage and a reduced speed limit on the A1101 Gypsy Lane bends near Wisbech is already cutting accident numbers they are devastated at recent events.

Action team member Virginia Bucknor said she remains convinced that cameras need to be installed along the road. She said: “This is just devastating. We always said we needed cameras along here and I think this is the only thing that will make drivers slow down. You need to hit their pockets.”

Victoria Reeve was one of the first at the scene of an accident at around 7.10am on Wednesday after a collision close to the junction with Chapel Lane, Newton. It involved a lorry, two 4x4s and a car.

She said: “I was driving into Wisbech when I saw a couple climbing up the side of the dyke. Cars were just driving by. They were in complete shock and I called the emergency services.

“I have to drive this road at least eight times a day and feel as if I take my life in my hands each time and wonder when it is going to be my turn to end up in a dyke due to someone else taking risks they shouldn’t. I think police should be doing more to make the whole length of the road less of a death trap.”

Last Thursday the road was closed after a car hit a tree close to the B11165 junction at Newton. The driver was slightly injured.

On Monday a Citroen Saxo car driven by a man flipped over onto its roof south of Tydd Gote. The driver escaped injury.

A police spokesman said: “We don’t know the cause of these accidents but at this time of year we would urge people to drive to the road conditions and keep to speed limits. People should make sure their cars are in good working order and exercise caution in adverse conditions.”
