PETER Roberts, Labour's Parliamentary Spokesperson for North East Cambridgeshire, has slammed the Chief Executive of Remploy, Bob Warner, for "cutting and running from the organisation" by retiring this November.
Mr Roberts said: "Mr Warner, notorious in Wisbech for a verbal pledge late last year that the local Remploy factory would remain open, only for closure to be announced in February 2008, is leaving his post with Remploy to pursue ' new challenges with non-executive positions.'
"This announcement has made me really angry, especially when you compare the future employment prospects of Mr Warner to those of the disabled people at the Wisbech site who have been coerced out of their jobs. The worry now is that Bob Warner's mind won't be on the job in hand, at a time when a proper vision for Remploy is needed most".
Mr Roberts said he is still awaiting a reply to his letter to James Purnell MP, Cabinet Minister for Work and Pensions, regarding whether the closure decision can be overturned given the previous assurances by Bob Warner and is in continuing discussions with the trade union Unite on this issue.
