IMPORTANT changes are being made to the council's bin rounds to make them more efficient and minimise the impact that collecting Fenland's waste has on the environment.

From Monday October 5, the routes that the refuse and recycling lorries usually take will be changing. This will minimise their mileage and fuel consumption and ultimately reduce carbon dioxide emissions across Fenland. It does mean that some changes will need to be made to days that bins are collected.

The changes are also being made to accommodate the new waste transfer station being built in March and will mean that extra homes can be absorbed into the revised rounds over the next few years.

Letters giving a full explanation of how the revised system will work will be sent to all residents during two weeks from September 14.

Notice of the changes will also be included in the latest "Recycle for Fenland" newsletter, which will also give details of a series of special "Getting it Sorted" roadshows that people can attend in their local area between September 7 and September 18 (see panel).

More information will be published over the next few weeks to ensure that all residents are made fully aware of how their service may change.

The changes are part of the council's continuing drive to deliver better services.

Councillor Peter Murphy, portfolio holder with responsibility for the environment, said: "These changes show that we are ahead of the game in planning for the future. Together with the new waste transfer station being built in March, they will enable us to maintain our current excellent service, improve the environment and provide for all the new homes coming to Fenland."
