The Cock Inn on March High Street – which was only just getting used to a new sign – now has a new name after being converted to an indie-themed bar.

And the sign - produced in the Fens by Carl Burton from Tatfink Signs at Coates - has been removed with the new name, Rigby’s, prominently featuring above the pub’s entrance.

Landlord Chris Kirby told customers back in January that “our new pub sign is up - and it looks amazing”.

But within weeks Mr Kirby, who returned to the pub last October after previously running it for many years, announced he was leaving.

He had been running the Cock with friend Darren Mundy but at the end of last month Chris announced new owners were moving in.

“It’s served its purpose and I’ve had somewhere to live for the last five months,” he wrote. “And I’ve kept the pub open instead of seeing another local pub shut down.

“The pub is being taken over and they are going along the same ideas as me aiming at families.

“It’s a shame that things have had to end sooner than we hoped but we have certainly had some great nights and I’m sure everyone can vouch for that.”

He added: “We would like to thank all our customers for their continued support throughout these last few months.

“We hope we brought a little entertainment back in your lives - even if it was for a short period. Here’s to our next ventures.”

Out with the old and in with new? Not quite since vinyl records, vintage gig posters and band signs are some of the features of the newly christened Rigbys.

It officially opened last Saturday following a renovation.

Rigby’s is owned by The Haimeco Group, who also own The VIP Lounge in Wisbech and several bars around the town.

“It has been re-named and given an indie theme whilst still retaining its local public house feel,” said a post on the Rigbys Facebook page.

Rigby’s next live music event takes place this Saturday when punk rock band True British Mayhem will play live.

Footnote: One former landlord from the 1950s was Former Peterborough and West Ham footballer Terry Woodgate. He also played once for March Town.
