A TURKISH man found working illegally in a Fenland kebab shop has been charged with using fake ID papers.

The 20 year-old Turk was found during a raid by the UK Border Agency on Ali's Kebab House in Wisbech Road, Outwell.

Officers from the local immigration team- supported by police and officers from the Department of Works and Pensions- carried out the raid.

"They found a 20-year-old Turkish man who had overstayed his visa working without permission," said a spokesman for the Border Agency.

"He was arrested on suspicion of using a false document to obtain employment and subsequently charged with ID offences."

The Turkish worker has since appeared before magistrates in Norwich and remanded in custody until March 26 when he is due to appear at Norwich Crown Court.

Ali's Kebab House, which moved to Outwell in 2002 after operating from a mobile van in Downham Market, now faces the prospect of a fine of as much as 10,000 unless it can prove the correct pre-employment checks were carried out.

At Ali's Meze Bar and Mangal Grill in Norfolk Street, Kings Lynn, the enforcement team also found another 20 year-old illegal worker from Turkey who has been detained pending his removal from the UK.

Insp Colin Daulby, who heads up Local Immigration Team Norfolk, said: "As long as there are illegal jobs, the UK will be an attractive place for illegal immigrants. That's why we have to put a stop to employers who don't play by the rules.

"Illegal working is not a victimless crime. It undercuts honest employers and has a serious impact on communities, taking jobs from those who are genuinely allowed to work.

"Anyone who takes on a foreign national without permission to work in the UK is breaking the law, undermining law-abiding businesses and faces a big fine.

"There are strict rules about which foreign nationals can get a job in the UK and businesses have a clear responsibility to carry out the right checks."

A tough new civil penalty system was introduced in 2008 to provide a fast and effective way of tackling bosses who fail to carry out proper checks on workers from outside Europe. A fine of up to 10,000 per worker can be imposed for every illegal worker found at a business.

Anyone who suspects that illegal workers are being employed should contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 where anonymity can be assured.
