A QUILT made to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the abolition of slavery has been presented to Wisbech Baptist church.

The quilt, which was designed and made by members of Wisbech's Freedom Quilters, has taken seven months to complete.

But the quilt is already destined to travel the world with several organisations and museums hoping to have the impressive quilt on loan for display. International interest has been expressed by the Virginia Quilt museum in Harrisonburg, Virginia.

The quilters, who meet at the Baptist Church, decided to make the quilt to mark the achievements of Thomas Clarkson of Wisbech and others involved in the abolition movement.

The design includes an image of Wisbech's Clarkson Memorial and illustrates the link between Christianity and the abolitionist movement.

Ten workshops have taken place and some work has also been carried out at home by the nine members involved in the project. More than 500 hours of work has gone into the design and completion of the quilt, which will be on display at the Baptist church during the Rose Fair.
