POLICE have warned they will seize cars being driven in an antisocial manner in the Walton Road area of Wisbech.

They are also targeting speeding drivers following complaints from residents about motorists ignoring the 30mph limit.

Police have accused drivers of putting residents' lives at risk and causing them distress.

They say they have the power to seize any car which has been used to cause, or is likely to cause, alarm, distress or annoyance to the public.

All caught speeding will be issued with fixed penalty notices, resulting in £60 fines and three points on their licences.

Sergeant Dave Bax said: "Speeding is illegal and dangerous and we will not tolerate those breaking the law in the Walton Road area. The drivers who are ignoring the law are not only potentially putting residents lives at risk but also causing them distress.

"We are committed to dealing with the issues facing residents in Wisbech and want to ensure that the residents of Walton Road can enjoy their neighbourhood without fear of speeding or anti-social drivers."

He added: "We take antisocial driving extremely seriously and will deal robustly with anyone caught committing such offences."

Police are also working with the Highways Agency and Department of Transport to look into the issue of increasing numbers of heavy lorries using Walton Road. Following complaints from residents they want to establish where the lorries are coming from.

Cambridgeshire County Council is currently designing a £50,000 traffic scheme for Walton Road in an effort to ease the problems being endured by residents.

Money had already been allocated for the scheme and work is programmed to begin this winter. Wisbech Town Council, local councillors and residents will be consulted once the design stage has been completed.
