A plaque has been unveiled in Wisbech under the historic Dann’s Clock, which was restored and returned to its original position.

The Wisbech Society and Wisbech Rotary Club funded the blue plaque, which was fitted on the outside of WH Brown in Bridge Street on Friday, to “ensure Dann’s Clock will continue to earn the recognition it deserves,” said Paul Eden, of The Wisbech Society.

“It details the significance of Dann’s Clock and its more recent, colourful history, adding interest to a street scene set to become even more significant to the town as restoration of the High Street gets under way thanks to Heritage Lottery Fund resources.”

In 2015 Dann’s Clock was returned to its original position on what was previously Smith’s tobacconists and once the premises of watch and clock maker James Dann, who originally installed it in 1864.

Ray Johnson, chairman of The Wisbech Society, said: “It was a bleak day for Wisbech when the clock was removed from its home of the last 150 years.”
