A TOUR along Wisbech tram and canal route was the first 'Peep into the Past' event in a programme organised by Wisbech and Fenland Museum.

It was hailed as a great success by local historian Andrew Ingram who led the coach tour to mark the 40th anniversary of the tramway's closure and the 80 years since the canal was abandoned.

Passengers watched archive films of the tramway including interviews with former drivers Charlie Rand and Albert South. There was also an interview with the Rev Wilbert Awdry, whose stories of Toby the Tram engine were based on the tramway.

On the return journey the party enjoyed refreshments in St Andrew's Methodist church, Outwell.

Mr Ingram said the coach had been fully booked weeks before the event and there are now plans for a repeat tour.
