A PARISH council chairman is to plead for improved safety measures at an accident black spot in his village - and has the support of more than 100 residents.

Villagers have signed a petition calling for improvements to the Swan Bridge junction at Parson Drove.

Their demands will be put to the Fenland Traffic Management Area Joint Committee when it meets on Friday by parish council chairman Gavin Booth.

However Amanda Mays, team leader for the accident investigation and prevention unit at the county council, doubts much can be done soon.

She will tell the committee that "site constraints and layout limit the types of lower cost treatment that could be pursued in this location".

Ms Mays said councillors and officials met earlier this month at Parson Drove to discuss the petition and as a result officers reviewed existing signing and lining on all approaches.

"The road makings in Fen Road in particular are quite worn," she said. "A full accident investigation review will also be undertaken to look into any more significant treatments that might be used."

If there is potential for major accident remedial works such as junction layout alterations or physical features these will be put into safety programme known as the 'October list'.

It means any scheme will have to compete with others and Ms Mays warned that the budget only allows for a small number of these bids to be added to the programme each year.

There can be no guarantee of timescale, but she expects the committee to consider bids later this year.
