GARY Salter and Daniel Kiff will be setting off for the Gambia in December when they take part in a gruelling 3,500-mile trip known as the ultimate banger challenge.
They are the 'Hunks in Junk' and will be driving in the Plymouth-to-Banjul Challenge for the London's Great Ormond Street Hospital, where Gary's godson was treated for a life-threatening heart condition.
Both Gary, of Back Lane, Long Sutton, and Daniel, of Oil Mill Lane, Wisbech, are looking for sponsors and support for their journey which is expected to last three weeks.
Daniel said: "We are trying to raise as much money as possible towards the Great Ormond Street Hospital and we are looking for donations of any kind towards making this trip a possibility.
"If an individual or company wishes to make a contribution towards the other expenses of the trip such as fuel, visas, road tolls, ferry crossings, insurance, or a donation of equipment, we will offer advertising space on the car and on the website."
Gary and Daniel stumbled across the challenge when Daniel saw an article in a travel magazine. They were looking for a good way to see in the new year.
Their trek will start in Plymouth on December 29 and will see them follow a route through France, Spain, Gibraltar, Morocco, Mauritania and Senegal. They are due in Banjul, capital of the Gambia, on January 17, 2007.
They have bought a left-hand-drive BMW 316 car for £100, complying with the challenge rules, as a right-hand-drive car may not be permitted entry into the Gambia.
The car will be auctioned off along with any excess equipment in Banjul, with proceeds going towards Gambian charities. Gary and Daniel will then return to Britain by air.
- To sponsor or donate equipment for Gary and Daniel's trip, contact Gary on 07748 596632 or Daniel on 07863 143369. Their website, www.hunksinjunk. co.uk, will be online this month.ent- which ensured a successful event at Walpole Highway on Sunday.
The fete, on the village playing field, was the second to take place there, after the success of the inaugural event last year.
