The Government has been urged by a Norfolk MP to step in and resolve the on-going saga of a Fenland village GP surgery which has moved into temporary accommodation.

The Terrington St John practice moved out of the village’s health centre after its new owners were unable to agree a deal with outgoing partners.

Peterborough-based primary care group First Health moved the practice into the village’s Scout hut last month but will move out once portable buildings have been put in place in the village.

Last night, South-West Norfolk MP Elizabeth Truss said she has written to health minister Simon Burns asking him to intervene and bring an end to the “unacceptable” situation.

She is also seeking to meet with the minister next week to further plead with him to take quick action.

Ms Truss said: “The people of Terrington St John and other villages are astounded that this situation has been allowed to continue.

“In this time of cutbacks it is not right that the NHS is paying for a temporary surgery when there is a very good surgery lying empty.”

She added: “It is very wrong that patients are being treated in inadequate facilities.”

Ms Truss said she knows local councillors have been pressing hard for a solution but she hopes involving the minister will add further pressure to get the matter resolved.

First Health could still purchase the village’s health centre after it emerged West Norfolk Council might compulsorily purchase the building.

Current opening times are 9am to 5pm, with the last GP appointment at 4.30pm. To contact the surgery call 01945 880471 or 01553 828884.
