A 13 turbine wind farm, that could inject £15 million into the local economy and power more than 13,000 homes, is nearing completion between Thorney and Parson Drove.
Drivers along the A47 east out of Peterborough may have noticed the progress of the farm, which energy company RES began work on in September 2014. The 100 metre-high turbines, which were delivered in June of last year, are now up and are undergoing a final phase of testing this month.
It is believed that the wind farm could generate £15 million over its 25 year lifetime, and once operational, Wryde Croft Wind Farm will provide a community benefits package of £130,000 per year, which includes a Community Fund to support local projects that will benefit people living and working near the turbines.
RES is now looking to link up with local businesses ahead of the wind farm’s completion and Tracy Scott, RES Project Manager, believes that involving those living in Fenland is vital for growth. She said: “As a British company it’s really important to us to involve local people and companies as much as possible. An important part of the project is that Wryde Croft is delivering a longer term legacy to the local economy, over and above its primary aim of providing renewable electricity at a reasonable cost.”
The company has already employed 15 local people to erect the turbines, including 20-year-old Callum Brooks from Emneth.
Callum joined his father’s construction company, Brooks Services UK, before moving to the Wryde Croft site in January 2015.
He said: “I’ve been operating plant machinery, managing the yard and been responsible for various site duties. Wryde Croft is the first wind farm project I’ve worked on and it has given me fantastic hands-on experience, which I can use to progress my career.”
