A nursery school garden was given a Ground Force-style makeover when volunteers from a Wisbech bank stepped in to help.

About 35 people were on hand to help with everything that staff at Emneth Nursery School and Children's Centre hoped to achieve in one day.

The idea came about after Anne Purdy, assistant head at Emneth Nursery, and Lisa Pearson, the nursery's senior day care practitioner, went on a forest school training course about teaching children about woodland.

Mrs Purdy said the course made them think about how the centre's play area could be adapted, and Jan Wheeler, a parent governor, who works for Barclays in Wisbech, was able to get the bank involved.

Work included creating a new sensory garden, butterfly area, willow weaving sculpture, fire pit, willow shelter and a tyre trail. The garden bandstand was also moved and benches given a new coat of paint.

Ten staff from Barclays joined 10 school staff, accompanied by partners, to carry out the makeover. The bank also donated £500, for plants to go in the new garden. A further £50 donation for the new garden came from Maria White, a former nursery practitioner, who had worked at the nursery for 21 years.

Art and technology students from Marshland High School also helped by making animal-shaped wooden sculptures, which were put on the fencing at the front of the nursery.
