The BBC's biggest new comedy series of the year so far is set to return for a second outing.
Small Prophets, created by Mackenzie Crook, will move from BBC Two to BBC One for its second series following a standout debut run that captivated viewers.
The show averaged 6.3 million viewers over 28 days, with the first episode now reaching 9.2 million views.
The series stars Crook alongside Sir Michael Palin, Pearce Quigley and Lauren Patel and is filmed and set in and around Manchester.
BBC confirms Small Prophets will return for a second series
Mackenzie Crook, writer and director of the series, said: "I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to tell the second half of this strange story and as intrigued as anyone else to find out what happens to Michael Sleep in his mystical quest.
"The prophets have foretold that series two will be happening next year and, as we know, they are compelled to speak the truth."
The series follows the character of Michael Sleep (Quigley), whose partner Clea has been missing for seven years.
He lives a quiet life working in a DIY store and visiting his father Brian (Palin), until Brian shares an old recipe for creating Homunculi—magical spirits that can predict the future.
Michael teams up with his colleague Kacey (Patel) to bring the prophesying creatures to life.
Series one introduced a cast of eccentric characters, including nosy neighbours Bev (Sophie Willan) and Clive (Jon Pointing), and store manager Gordon (Crook).
Gill Isles, producer of the show, said: "It’s a real privilege to be producing the second series of Small Prophets.
"Mackenzie has created such a distinctive, magical world, and I can’t wait to return to Marvin Gardens and help bring this new chapter to life."
The six-part series will be made by Treasure Trove Productions and Channel X North.
It is written and directed by Crook, whose previous credits include Detectorists and Worzel Gummidge.
Emma Lawson, BBC interim director of comedy, said: "We’re beyond delighted to be bringing Small Prophets back for a second series.
"Mackenzie has created a world packed with wonder, magic and unforgettable characters which feels completely unlike anything else on television and we can’t wait to see where the story takes us next.
"To be continued…"
