‘Mortified’ mum warns parents to check children’s mobile phone accounts following £500 bill - for a £9.99 per month contract!

A “mortified” Wisbech mum is warning other parents to be diligent with their children’s mobile phone accounts after she was stung by a £500 phone bill.

Over two to three months Jenine Snow’s 12-year-old son Ewan Samway managed to rack up a bill of over £500 on his mobile phone account. However, it should have been limited to just £9.99 per month.

By downloading games and apps – the majority via Google Play - Ewan amassed a bill of £81.89 for November, £224.91 for December and £173.78 for January.

Mrs Snow said: “In October 2015, I went to the Wisbech branch of EE and said that I wanted to put my son on a contract under my name. I also told the member of staff that I wanted everything capped – she ensured me that would happen.

“I put my trust in her,” she added.

“I have my phones and broadband with EE, so when we narrowed it down to my son’s account I couldn’t believe it.”

EE have said they will bar the mammoth bill – which was only alerted to Mrs Snow as she was completing her tax returns.

“I was completely oblivious until then. If I hadn’t have checked the money would still be coming out.”

Mrs Snow is now waiting for a refund on the charges, but still wants to make others wary.

“I just want to warn other people to keep an eye on their phone bills because these things could easily slip through the net,” she added.

“Parents need to understand that it’s so easily done.”
